DERBY, Kan. (KSNW) — Multiple fire departments were called to a building fire Thursday night in Derby. The fire was reported around 9:15 p.m. in the 300 block of South Water Avenue, where smoke and flames were visible, according to officials.
Investigators: Heat-related injury, not crime, in Ford County case
Derby Fire and Rescue said crews launched an aggressive offensive attack but were met with hoarding, high heat, and heavy fire conditions throughout. After unsuccessful attempts at extinguishment and dangerous conditions, the fire was declared defensive, and crews backed out to a safe location.
“They’re very labor-intensive. Even in these evening hours, the high heat and humidity conditions still have to rotate crews in and out,” Derby Fire Chief John Turner said.
More than 50 firefighters responded. Two firefighters experienced mild heat exhaustion but did not require transport. The cause is under investigation…
