LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Government Wash will reopen this fall with overnight camping and a small launch area for kayaks and canoes, according to officials at Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
After a yearlong cleanup that hauled 10,000 pounds of trash out of the area, Phase I of the project represents a careful first step. Officials unveiled their plan Thursday morning during a community meeting held online.
“We will keep a strong ranger presence and have volunteers help oversee the day-to-day use of the campground,” according to Kat Vollinger, a park ranger brought in from Mount Rainier National Park for her experience with similar projects.
A map of the “primitive” campground shows about a dozen campsites near the water, along with developed campsites for volunteers who will be an important part of the effort.
