Writing community reacts following closure of Iowa Summer Writing Festival

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – The University of Iowa’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) announced the discontinuation of the Iowa Summer Writing Festival on August 11.

The university cited “ongoing funding challenges” in their announcement and stated that the decision is not a reflection of the dedication of the staff, but rather “the realities of the resources required.”

According to a representative for the university, expenses for the festival have exceeded revenue by an average of $115,000 for each of the past five years. Thus, the program has been supported by the Magid Center for Writing, which is funded by “a combination of private gifts, program registrations, and additional support” from CLAS…
