Autopsy: Man’s death tied to ‘less-lethal’ shots fired by Phoenix police

PHOENIX — A man who died shortly after Phoenix police arrested him in January died from injuries sustained by getting hit with a less-lethal munition, records show.

The death of 33-year-old Turrell Clay has been ruled a “homicide” by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office after examiners observed signs of blunt force trauma on his chest and other parts of his body, according to an autopsy report recently obtained by 12News.

Clay was arrested on Jan. 10 after he reportedly ran from officers with a gun strapped to a hip holster. He later climbed atop the roof of a local residence. There were seven documented deployments of less-lethal ammunition as police were attempting to subdue Clay, the report shows…
