WATERVLIET, N.Y. (NEWS10) — In recognition of Ukrainian Independence Day this weekend, local Ukrainian Americans held a special ceremony on Friday in Watervliet. A flag raising was held at city hall ahead of this Sunday’s anniversary.
Local leaders, members of the Saint Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church, and Watervliet residents came out to mark the occasion. Local officials said the ceremony was a small way the town can show support for Ukraine as the four-year long war continues.

“It’s a very symbolic way of supporting our friends here,” Watervliet Mayor Charles Patricelli said. “I know so many have relatives and friends still in Ukraine. The war in Ukraine has gone on for far too long, and they need some resolution to it.”
