South Carolina man arrested for theft of nearly $1 million from grandmother

MADISON, Ind. (WISH) — A South Carolina man was arrested Thursday for multiple charges related to the theft of nearly $1 million from his grandmother in Jefferson County.

In May 2024, a financial institution reported suspicious transactions involving the accounts of an elderly Jefferson County woman. Indiana State Police detectives began an investigation shortly after. During the investigation, investigators learned that in 2021, Eric Dyer, 54, of Batesburg, South Carolina, was named power of attorney/legal guardian over his grandmother, who resided in an assisted living center in Madison, Indiana.

A review of bank records indicated that between 2022 and 2024, Dyer allegedly withdrew nearly $1 million from his grandmother’s bank accounts for his personal use. Investigators also learned that Dyer was behind in paying his grandmother’s assisted living facility monthly balance…
