Shellfish harvesting reopens in parts of the Florida panhandle

ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — Shellfish harvesting will resume in Escambia Bay, according to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

An FDACS news release said that the shellfish area of Escambia Bay will reopen at sunrise tomorrow, Aug. 22, for the harvest of oysters, clams and mussels. It does not apply to scallops, shrimp or crabs.

The opening affects Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

The area had been closed because of higher than normal fecal coliform in the water, but those levels now meet National Shellfish Sanitation Program standards…
