Ongoing budget negotiations risk a potential state government shutdown

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan lawmakers are left with a little over one month to reach an agreement on this year’s state budget after failing to meet the July 1 deadline.

If lawmakers once again fail to meet their upcoming deadline of Sept. 30, they risk a complete government shutdown beginning Oct. 1.

“They can hold off a little bit longer, but the clock is ticking,” John Clark, professor of political science at Western Michigan University, said. “We need to see some movement pretty soon.”…
