Orlando Man Sentenced For 2019 Fatal Crash In The City Of Paterson

PATERSON, NJ.- On Wednesday, a 53-year-old Orlando, Florida, man will be spending the next nine years in New Jersey State Prison, after being sentenced for a 2019 fatal collision, which tragically claimed the life of a pedestrian, Jorge Pena-Mesa, 31, of Paterson, New Jersey, who was fatally struck while standing next to a parked vehicle on East 24th Street in the City of Paterson.

According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Alvin Mootoo, 53, of Orlando, Florida, appeared in Passaic County Superior Court and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Marilyn C. Clark to nine years in State Prison, subject to the No Early Release Act, which will require Mootoo to serve 85% of his custodial term before becoming eligible for parole.

Mootoo Was Convicted On Charges In May

On May 19, 2025, following a nearly month-long trial before Judge Clark, a Passaic County jury found Mootoo guilty of second-degree Death by Auto/Reckless Vehicular Homicide; and a Disorderly Persons Offense of Assault by Auto.

Judge Clark Additionally Ordered Mootoo To Pay Restitution

In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Clark ordered Mootoo to serve an additional three years of parole upon his release from prison. He will also be required to pay $5,100 in restitution. Judge Clark sentenced Mootoo to concurrent 180 days for his conviction on the assault by auto charge…
