These Staten Island emergency departments just won a prestigious award that only 96 hospitals have earned

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Staten Island University Hospital’s two emergency departments have again received a prestigious award to recognize their excellence in nursing.

The Emergency Nurses Association Lantern Award is an honor given to emergency departments for exceptional leadership, practice, education, and advocacy that elevate patient care and support staff well-being. This year, the emergency departments at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) Ocean Breeze and Prince’s Bay campuses join 94 other recipients worldwide.

“There’s something unique about the way our teams function here,” said Christopher Sorrentino, senior director of patient care services in the emergency department. “We’re not just colleagues; we’re part of the community we serve. That changes how you approach care. You take it personally, and you work harder to support one another.”

The Lantern Award designation will remain in place for three years, during which time SIUH’s emergency departments will be honored in Emergency Nurses Association publications, on the association’s website and during the Emergency Nursing 2025 annual conference in New Orleans this September…
