Suspect With Defaced Firearm Taken Into Custody Near Polar Park In Worcester

WORCESTER, Mass. — What looked like a scene from a movie outside of Polar Park in Worcester on Wednesday turned out to be real when police arrested a man wanted on outstanding warrants and found him in possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number.

Worcester police said Gang Unit detectives were on patrol in the Madison Street area around 4:52 p.m. Wednesday, when they spotted a vehicle driven by 33-year-old Emmanuel Hernandez of Worcester. Officers confirmed the car was registered to Hernandez, who was wanted for allegedly pointing a firearm at someone in a recent incident. Detectives stopped the vehicle across from Polar Park as fans were arriving for a game.

Police said Hernandez resisted when officers attempted to arrest him and reached for his waistband before being taken to the ground by detectives and uniformed officers working a detail at the ballpark. A firearm fell from Hernandez’s waistband during the struggle. Investigators later determined the serial number on the gun was defaced, and Hernandez did not have a license to carry.
