FIEL speaks out about VAWA fraud victims in Houston

HOUSTON (KIAH) — FIEL HOUSTON called a meeting to highlight the plea for some immigrant families that feel confused about paperwork submitted on their behalf. This is what Executive Director CesarEspinosa said people feel they’ve been lied to when seeking legal help.

Espinosa said he’s seen cases where when people read their actual files or when they get their actual paperwork that they’ve submitted, it’s not what families believed it to be.

“One of these programs is being used to lie to the federal government, the voucher program, the Violence Against Women Act, which states on its face when you go to the USCIS website, that folks have to be victims of battery or extreme cruelty,” Espinosa said.

He claimed that some attorneys have been telling families that they qualify for VAWA when they don’t. “In most of our cases or in different VAWA cases that are that are filed, it requires for you in most cases, not to have contact with your abuser,” Espinosa continued. “In many of the cases in the over 80 cases that we’ve received just in our office so far, many of the victims of the victimizers, many of the people who are who are supposed to be the bad actors were even paying for the process.”…
