Teachers face rising costs to keep classrooms stocked

The rising cost of school supplies is being felt by teachers as they stock up ahead of the new school year.

“I have purchased about $120 and we haven’t even started the school year yet,” said Katelyn Lillis, a kindergarten teacher in west central Minnesota. “In the past, I have spent upwards of $500 to $600 a year, towards the beginning of my career, especially.”

She explained districts often cover the basics, including desks, chairs and items required for the curriculum. Everything else, however, comes from teachers, from the decorations to the classroom library…
