CALERA, Ala. — A driver was arrested after leading police on a reckless chase without headlights, striking a pole and a gas pump, according to the Calera Police Department. The incident began when Calera Dispatch received calls about a vehicle driving erratically without headlights.
An officer located the vehicle in a gas station parking lot, where it hit a pole and a gas pump. Despite the officer’s attempts to stop the vehicle using lights, sirens, and a PA system, the driver refused to comply and continued onto Highway 31. The vehicle eventually stopped at another gas station on Highway 31, where additional officers and a Shelby County Deputy assisted in removing the driver and a passenger from the vehicle.
The driver, who was unable to communicate in English, refused to complete a field sobriety test through translation. Both the driver and passenger appeared intoxicated, and open alcohol containers were found in the vehicle. The driver faces charges including DUI, attempting to elude, leaving the scene of an accident, driving without a license, and driving without headlights at night.
