Early Thursday evening, a large number of Durham community members’ — including some Duke students and University and health system employees — phones buzzed.
The four sentence text message they received came from United Southern Service Workers (USSW) and asked community members to support one thing: Durham Rising’s cause.
“Duke is cutting jobs while workers struggle to get by. We’re demanding $25/hr+ and real protection for ALL Duke workers,” the text read. The author identified as “Theresa from USSW.” Its final sentence provided a link to Durham Rising’s petition and called for the recipient’s support…
