‘Pretty powerful’ — New Worcester Peace Choir gives voice to peace, hope and justice

When the new Worcester Peace Choir gave voice for the first time with about 25 singers at a commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima Aug. 6, “quite honestly, it was pretty powerful,” said the choir’s co-founder and co-director Matthew Johnsen.

The choir, an all-volunteer independent group, came together for “Cranes and Chorus: A Communal Call for Nuclear Disarmament” held at Regatta Point State Park Aug. 6 and organized by the Center for Nonviolent Solutions.

Johnsen has seen bigger singing groups than the 25 or so that were on hand. He was one of the organizers of Mass Remembers in 2011, which brought together 1,000 voices in song at Institute Park in Worcester for a 10th anniversary tribute and memorial to the victims of 9/11…
