The Jefferson County Citizens Coalition (JCCC) has thrown its support behind State Representative Juandalynn Givan for Mayor of Birmingham. This marks the first time the Coalition has ever placed a woman at the top of its ticket. It also breaks from tradition: in past elections, the group has consistently endorsed incumbents.
Representative Givan, who has represented District 60 in the Alabama House of Representatives since 2010, said in January she joined the Mayor’s race because the City needs a fresh start.
At her formal campaign launch on January 1, Givan stood before images of the 151 homicide victims recorded in 2024 and issued a clear call for renewal. “It is time for change,” Givan said. “It is time for rejuvenation. It is time for revitalization but most of all it is time to stop the mass killings and shootings that are overtaking our streets and permeating through not just one neighborhood.
