New free passes eliminate financial disincentive for Ann Arbor residents to recycle

ANN ARBOR, MI — For years, Ann Arbor residents have had to choose between throwing certain recyclable items in the trash or taking them out of town to be recycled for a $3 fee.

But now the city is eliminating that financial disincentive to recycle, introducing a new way for residents to access the city’s drop-off station in Pittsfield Township at no cost.

As of Aug. 20, city residents can apply online for a free pass that covers the entry fee at the 2950 E. Ellsworth Road station, where residents can take items that can’t go in curbside carts, including oversized recyclables and special waste materials…
