Madison VA hospital’s ‘severe’ staffing shortages worsen

The Madison VA medical center is facing one of its worst staffing shortages in recent years, according to a new annual report from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Office of the Inspector General.

The office’s report shows how many occupations at VA health care centers nationwide are deemed difficult to fill but aren’t necessarily vacant, based on surveys of the centers. This year, all VA health care facilities reported staffing shortages.

Among clinical jobs, psychology, psychiatry, practical nurse, primary care and nursing assistants were reported as the hardest to fill. On the nonclinical side, shortages were deemed the worst in police, custodial workers, medical support assistants, food service workers, and supply clerical and technician roles…
