Ex-owner of site of Las Vegas’ deadliest fire surrenders for prison sentence

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The former owner of the site of the city of Las Vegas’ deadliest fire surrendered to authorities Tuesday, three months after a judge gave him 90 days of freedom.

Adolfo Orozco-Garcia, 49, originally faced 27 charges related to the December 2019 fire that killed six tenants: Donald Keith Bennett, 63; Tracy Ann Cihal, 57; Francis Lombardo Jr., 72; Cynthia Mikell, 61; Kerry Marie Odo-Baclaan, 46; and Henry Lawrence Pinc, 70.

The fire injured 13 people and left more than 50 homeless. It is the deadliest fire within Las Vegas city limits.

In January, Orozco-Garcia took a plea deal, avoiding a lengthy trial scheduled to begin in February. Orozco-Garcia agreed to an Alford plea on two counts of involuntary manslaughter and one charge of wanton disregard of safety resulting in substantial bodily harm or death, documents said. An Alford plea, essentially a plea of no contest, means a defendant does not admit guilt, but believes prosecutors had enough evidence to convince a jury to convict. Orozco-Garcia admitted the deal meant he could have served less time should a jury have convicted him.

In June, Clark County District Court Judge Jacqueline Bluth sentenced him to 19-48 months in prison. She allowed him to remain out of custody and self-surrender in 90 days, which landed on Tuesday…
