Victim to Recover $1.9 Million in Stolen Assets After LCSO, Federal Investigation

Back in February, Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman announced the recovery of $1.4 million in cryptocurrency stolen by scammers after a joint investigation by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and Federal Bureau of Investigation. Now, feds say the victim will get their money back.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced Monday that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia has seized $1,971,399.80 and is preparing to return it to the victim in the case.

Scammers sent unsolicited text messages to the victim and gained their trust through conversation, DOJ said in a statement. The scammers convinced the victim to invest money in crypto through a fake website. When the victim tried to withdraw their money, the suspects convinced the victim to pay them more money, claiming the victim owed taxes on profits that didn’t exist…
