WILMINGTON — The Rev. John J. Mink, pastor of St. Ann Catholic Church in Wilmington’s Forty Acres neighborhood, a decorated military chaplain and longtime servant of the Diocese of Wilmington, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2025, following complications from a stroke, at the age of 65.
Born in Philadelphia, Father Mink pursued a life of faith and service that spanned nearly four decades. Ordained to the priesthood in 1985 by Bishop Robert E. Mulvee, he quickly became known for his compassion, humor, and devotion to the people of his parishes. His assignments included Holy Family in Ogletown, St. John the Beloved in Sherwood Park, and Our Lady of Fatima in Wilmington Manor, where he became pastor in 1998. In 2012, he was appointed pastor of St. Ann Parish, a historic faith community in Wilmington, where he served until his death.
Within the Diocese of Wilmington, Father Mink played a vital role in shaping parish life and priestly ministry. He served on the Diocesan Pastoral Council and the College of Consultors, advising bishops on pastoral priorities. As director of the Priests Personnel Committee for nearly 20 years, he was instrumental in guiding the placement and support of clergy across Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore, often mentoring younger priests entering ministry.
Military Service and Chaplaincy
In addition to his parish responsibilities, Father Mink devoted more than 25 years to the spiritual care of service members and first responders. Commissioned as a chaplain officer with the Delaware Army National Guard in 1990, he later transferred to the Delaware Air National Guard, where he served as Wing Chaplain.
