WASHINGTON — The developers and former owner of a Northeast D.C. apartment building endangered tenants with what the attorney general is calling “shoddy, illegal construction,” a new lawsuit alleges.
D.C.’s Office of the Attorney General, alongside the Department of Buildings, investigated the conditions of 5821 Dix Street NE, and in the lawsuit filed Tuesday, said they found that construction was never properly completed. The 40-unit building allegedly failed basic safety inspections, and owners rented out apartments knowing the building had exposed wires in halls, holes and debris in the building, was not water or air tight and had no fire alarms, the suit alleges.
