Police warn against distracted driving in school zones

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A few days into the school year, Sioux Falls police are reminding drivers to pay attention to school zones. Classes at public schools started last Thursday, and several tickets have already been issued.

Every weekday morning, more than 25,000 kids are making their way to class in Sioux Falls. There are 43 public schools, and more than 100 streets are designated as school zones for drivers. Sioux Falls police are patrolling the school zones and are reminding drivers that the mandatory speed limit is 15 mph when children are present.

“We are really just looking for on our end, you know, find that person that is 100 percent not paying attention and blasting through there at very high speeds,” said Lt. Andrew Siebenborn.

If police issue a school zone violation it can cost a driver between 120 and 380 dollars depending on the speed. Kids are often walking with with their friends near their school and are easily distracted. It’s up to drivers to be aware and not looking at a phones…
