Grand Rapids ‘storybook walks’ encourage outdoor reading for kids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — At Burton Woods and three other Kent County parks, families can now enjoy “Storybook Walks” from the Great Start Collaborative.

“A ‘Storybook Walk’ is when you take a book and you deconstruct the pages,” Paula Brown, director of the Great Start Collaborative, said. “You have the individual pages along a trail, in a park… families can read and follow the stories as they walk along.”

As a tool to promote literacy for families and kids, Storybook Walks keep park visitors engaged in reading while they explore the great outdoors.

“Reading is fundamental,” Brown said. “(Storybook Walks are) a fun way to incorporate literacy skills into our day-to-day routines.”

An official ribbon cutting ceremony for the Storybook Walk was held at Burton Woods on Aug. 26 to commemorate the new feature with special guest appearances from some children’s book mascots…
