ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — This morning, alongside RiverLink, members of the News 13 team spent a few hours on the banks of the French Broad River helping to eliminate invasive species.
Elijah Charett is the stewardship coordinator for RiverLink. On Wednesday, August 27, his job was to ensure we were cutting away at the right material, mainly Johnson grass and kudzu.
“River cane is our native bamboo here in Asheville,” Charett said. “[Johnson grass and kudzu] compete with river cane when it’s young and the kudzu, especially, can tear down the river cane. The Johnson grass just produces a ton of seeds, so it can really scatter all over this area and outcompete it that way.”…
