Tips to protect Kentuckians’ cars against break-ins, thefts

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one motor vehicle is stolen every 37 seconds in the United States—costing Americans more than $8 billion a year.

“That’s billion with a B. So it’s a huge industry for criminals,” said Lori Weaver Hawkins, public affairs manager with AAA Bluegrass.

In Kentucky alone, there were 11,337 vehicles stolen in 2024, according to Kentucky State Police data.

Data from the Lexington Police Department shows that in 2024, there were 907 reported auto thefts and 1,310 incidents where items were stolen out of vehicles. The numbers for 2025 only cover the period through July 31, but already this year, there have been 489 auto thefts and 643 incidents involving stolen items…
