The Brown Side of Coastal Flooding: From Savannah to Brunswick, sewage spills on the rise

Sewer systems in coastal Georgia seem to have had enough of the rains and are spewing in retaliation.

The city of Savannah reported that 12 of 13 sewer spills this year have already occurred within the first few rainy weeks of August, according to documents from a city information request. Not only that, but the number of spills and their contents also appear to be on the rise.

These overflows are usually a mix of stormwater, groundwater and sewer water, said Shawn Rosenquist, the city’s assistant director of water resources planning and engineering. Although the water is diluted, “it is considered to be wastewater, in the sense that it’s not supposed to be spilled.”…
