Texas wants to scrap STAAR, critics warn it’s “more of the same”

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Texas House has voted to dismantle the STAAR test as we know it, but the proposed fix has some parents and educators saying lawmakers are simply multiplying the problem.

House Bill 8 would phase out the single, high-stakes STAAR exam in 2027. In its place, students would face three smaller tests spaced throughout the school year. Supporters say shorter exams will reduce pressure on students and deliver quicker feedback.
