SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – With the potential for heavy rain comes the risk of flash flooding. But it’s nearly impossible to know exactly where.

Springfield is extremely prone to flooding. During the mid-20th century, Springfield underwent a population boom, and urban planning was not a top priority. In addition, Springfield sits atop a Karst topography.

Karst topography is known to be porous, meaning it can become overwhelmed and unable to absorb more water. It is also prone to sinkholes.
