Rio Rancho Public Schools install weapon detectors at several schools

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s one of the few school districts in New Mexico using advanced technology to detect weapons on kids; Rio Rancho Public Schools has added detectors at almost every middle and high school in the city.

It’s a new way of starting school for many Rio Rancho middle and high school students. Rio Rancho Public Schools has installed a new system at several schools called “Evolv”. “Evolv is a lot different than the standard metal detectors that we’re all kind of familiar with,” said Wyndham Kemsley, Executive Director of Communications, Rio Rancho Public Schools.

It uses A.I. to detect weapons without kids having to take out metal items like phones or keys. “Students know about it, students know that they’re going to have to walk through this system every single day when they get to school. So, it doesn’t really make sense for them to try to bring anything that they shouldn’t be bringing to school,” said Kemsley…
