Cover Up No More: Tarps Illegal In Ann Arbor

The city of Ann Arbor, Michigan, is cracking down on people using tarps on their property since they are against the zoning ordinance.

There’s no clarification on whether exceptions are made for storm-related roof damage and a tarp is needed to protect the home until it can be repaired.

Uses for Tarps

You never realize how useful a tarp is until you need one. Tarps are versatile covers used for protection from the elements (rain, sun, wind), covering and securing items like construction materials, vehicles, and equipment, and creating temporary shelters for camping or outdoor events.

Often, when a roof is leaking, a homeowner or contractor will place a tarp to prevent damage to the home until a repair can be made. Not every city’s zoning laws permit tarps, which can result in fines.
