City of Columbia asking for volunteers to help with pedestrian and bike counts

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The City of Columbia is looking for volunteers to help with its upcoming pedestrian and bicyclist counts this fall.

These counts are part of a project that started back in 2014 through the city’s Walk Bike Columbia Master Plan. Since then, volunteers have logged nearly 50,000 pedestrians and more than 2,500 cyclists at 58 different locations. That information has already helped shape new sidewalks, crosswalks, and bike lanes across the city.

City officials say these counts are important because they can help identify which intersections, and sidewalks need improvements. By collecting data on people walking, biking, or even using a stroller or wheelchair, planners get a clearer picture of how Columbia’s roads are really being used.
