New $160 million Louisiana women’s prison opens in St. Gabriel

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The new Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women, a $160 million facility in St. Gabriel, is now open after three years of construction.

State officials, including Gov. Jeff Landry, attended the grand opening ceremony on Thursday and toured the new prison. The facility is Louisiana’s only women’s multi-level security prison. It is nearly 300,000 square feet and has 15 buildings. The new facility was built after the former women’s prison was forced to close due to destruction from flooding in 2016.

“The new facility was designed with technology and advanced security systems to create a safer environment for not only those within the correctional facility but the surrounding community,” Landry said…
