Man who lost wife to Alzheimer’s honored for helping caregivers

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — More than seven million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease—and more than 75,000 of them are Oklahomans. Sometimes the disease can be hardest on the caregivers, who, many times, are left exhausted and overwhelmed. One Edmond man knows that all too well.

Gail Magley was a wife, a mother, a speech pathologist—and a patient of early-onset Alzheimer’s. Gail was just 52 years old when the disease crept in. It was a diagnosis no one ever wants to hear.

“It’s the worst day of your life,” said her husband, Herb Magley. “We just went home and cried for days on end.”

Herb devoted the next 13 years tending to his bride, even when Alzheimer’s stole Gail’s ability to recognize him. Gail lost her battle in 2015, after 45 years of marriage. In her honor, Herb’s battle continues…
