Buncombe Co. sheriff raises safety concern following ICE arrest outside courthouse

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (FOX Carolina) – Buncombe County Sheriff Miller is raising safety concerns following an ICE arrest outside of the courthouse.

The sheriff’s office’s attorney Jorge Redmond said Jediael Apolinar Amaya Sanchez was taken into custody by federal officers on Aug. 21. The sheriff’s office was aware of federal officers present incident courthouse but were not notified from ICE beforehand that they were there to detain Sanchez or anyone else.

Officials mentioned that Sanchez was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility on two separate occasions for the following charges:

  • Booked on Aug. 16:
  • Assault with a deadly weapon
  • Driving while impaired
  • Communicating threats
  • Speeding
  • Expired registration card/tag
  • No operators license
  • Expired/no inspection
  • Booked on Aug. 23:
  • Assault on a female
  • Assault with a deadly weapon
  • Break/enter terrorize/injure

According to Redmond, this incident caused Sheriff Miller to have concerns similar to Mecklenburg County Sheriff McFadden.

“Sheriff [Miller’s] concerns dealt with internal safety and external safety within the community,” said Redmond. “Internally within the sheriff’s office, there was a concern of a possible ‘blue on blue’ incident since our deputy had escorted the individual out of the courthouse and there was no prior notice in which incidents are likely to occur from misidentification and poor or lack of communication. Externally, the Sheriff had concerns of overall community safety.”…
