8 homeless residents sue California city over unsafe camps

San Diego, California – Eight people living at San Diego’s “safe sleeping” camps for homeless residents are suing the city, claiming the sites are anything but safe.

The federal lawsuit, filed Monday, describes conditions at the two sanctioned encampments near Balboa Park as “inaccessible and inhumane.” It names the city of San Diego, along with the nonprofits Dreams for Change and the Downtown San Diego Partnership, which help operate the sites.

“These camps, operating under the Orwellian name of the Safe Sleeping Program, are anything but safe for its residents,” the complaint states…
