Archdiocese bankruptcy leaves local churches struggling to cover soaring insurance bills

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -The property insurance crisis in Louisiana is hitting churches in the New Orleans area, and parish leaders say they should not expect financial help from the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

“Every parish stands alone. It’s a separate 501(c)(3) organization. They have their own revenue and expenses and under Canon law they’re a separate institution,” said Dirk Wild, chief financial officer of the archdiocese. “Especially with the archdiocese being in bankruptcy, the archdiocese is unable to fund insurance or any other cost for the parishes. So, they’re on their own to fund those costs.”

Wild spoke with reporters last summer, before a proposed deal to settle hundreds of clergy sex abuse claims was negotiated through federal bankruptcy court. From Aug. 29 to Oct. 29, eligible claimants will vote on whether to accept the settlement…
