Judge tosses self-defense motion in March fatal shooting

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A preliminary hearing was held for Jaden Watts, the teen accused in a March shooting that killed 24-year-old Demarc Burgess in southeast Wichita.

Wichita police had been searching for Watts since late April in connection with the death of Burgess, following a disturbance at a home near 143rd St. East and Kellogg. Wichita police and U.S. Marshals arrested Watts near the 700 block of S. Hunter in June.

At his preliminary hearing on Thursday, a judge denied a motion from Watts’s attorney requesting a dismissal, arguing that the shooting was a case of self-defense and he was immune from prosecution under state law.

Judge Tyler Roush rejected the argument and bound Watts over for trial. An arraignment hearing is scheduled for Sept. 11…
