EU Condemns Russia’s Attacks on Ukraine, Vows Further Sanctions
The European Union has strongly condemned Russia’s recent attacks on Ukraine, including a deadly strike in Kyiv that killed 23 civilians, among them four children. The attack, which also damaged the British Council and EU delegation offices, drew sharp criticism from EU High Representative Kaja Kallas. In a statement backed by 26 member states and the United Kingdom, Kallas denounced the attacks as a “deliberate escalation” undermining peace efforts.
The EU statement highlighted the violation of international law inherent in endangering diplomatic personnel, referencing the damage to the EU delegation in Kyiv. Kallas, speaking at an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Copenhagen, accused Russia of “mocking peace efforts” and emphasized the need for increased pressure on the Russian government.
The statement underscored that intentional attacks against civilians constitute war crimes and those responsible will be held accountable. The EU pledged continued support for Ukraine and announced its intention to develop a 19th sanctions package against Russia. The message to Moscow was clear: cease the violence and demonstrate a genuine commitment to peace.
