Man connected to March shooting, fatal crash sentenced

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A man arrested in connection with a shooting in southeast Wichita that led to a fatal crash has been sentenced.

Jonearl Smith entered a guilty plea in July to two counts of criminal discharge of a firearm and one count of criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was sentenced on Thursday in Sedgwick County District Court to 52 months in prison.

Prosecutors allege that shortly before 8:30 p.m., March 16, Smith opened fire on a Mercury Grand Marquis carrying three men, including John Dotson, 46, of Wichita. The Mercury crashed into another vehicle in the 4600 block of E Mt. Vernon.

Dotson died of his injuries, and the two other men in the car were seriously injured…
