United Way helping residents prepare as federal paper checks end

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Paper checks for federal benefits are about to disappear, and a Wichita nonprofit is stepping in to make sure people aren’t left behind.

At the end of September, the federal government will stop mailing paper checks for Social Security, tax refunds, and other payments. From then on, money will only be issued through direct deposit or prepaid debit cards.

That could be a major hurdle in Wichita, where nearly one in five residents does not have a bank account.
