Monarch butterfly migration takes flight over Ohio

TOLEDO, Ohio — As August fades into September, Toledo residents may notice flashes of orange and black fluttering overhead. The annual monarch butterfly migration is underway, one of the most remarkable natural events in North America.

Each fall, millions of monarchs begin their incredible journey south, traveling up to 3,000 miles to overwintering grounds in central Mexico.

Here in northwest Ohio, the sight of monarchs often peaks in late August through September as they stop to feed on nectar-rich flowers and fuel up for the long road ahead…
