Jackson man pleads guilty to attempted robbery of dollar store

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A Jackson man pled guilty in federal court to the attempted robbery of a dollar store in Jackson.

According to court documents, Torrance Stewart, 31, entered a local business on May 2, 2022, with the intent to rob the store with a firearm. Prosecutors said Stewart brandished a pistol and threatened the store clerk into retrieving money from the cash register.

When the register malfunctioned, Stewart ran away from the scene. Jackson police arrested Stewart in a nearby neighborhood.

Stewart is scheduled to be sentenced on December 15, 2025, and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

The United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosive is investigating the case with assistance from the Jackson Police Department.
