Tears of joy, American dreams: 25 new citizens sworn in during heartwarming New Bedford ceremony

On August 29, 2025, the Immigrants’ Assistance Center (IAC) in New Bedford, Massachusetts, hosted a naturalization ceremony where 25 immigrants from nine countries became U.S. citizens by taking the Oath of Allegiance.

In fiscal year (FY) 2024, 818,500 immigrants became U.S. citizens through the naturalization process, which is the method by which lawful permanent residents obtain citizenship. To naturalize, immigrants must be at least 18 years old, hold a green card for a certain period (typically five years, or three years if married to a U.S. citizen), and meet other requirements including demonstrating basic English and U.S. history and government knowledge, and passing a background check.
