A personal plea to save cancer funding: op-ed

Twelve years ago, I heard the words no one ever wants to hear: “you have cancer.” More specifically, stage 3 breast cancer.

I had watched my mother go through her own cancer battle in the 1970s, when screenings and treatment options weren’t anything like they are today. She underwent surgery, which gave us some extra time. But ultimately, colon cancer took her from us at age 62…
