LVIV, Ukraine – Former Ukrainian parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy was killed in a brazen attack here Saturday, prompting a nationwide manhunt and vows from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to bring those responsible to justice.

Parubiy, who led the Rada from 2016 to 2019, was shot by an unknown assailant in what Zelenskyy described as a “horrific murder” and a carefully planned crime. Authorities have mobilized extensive resources to investigate the killing.

President Zelenskyy confirmed he has been in direct contact with SBU head Vasyl Maliuk, ensuring the nation’s top security agency is fully engaged in the investigation. The president has pledged to keep the public informed as the investigation progresses.

A prominent figure in Ukrainian politics, Parubiy was a strong advocate for closer ties with the European Union and NATO. He played a key leadership role in the 2014 Maidan Revolution, the protests that ousted pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych. Following the revolution, he served as secretary of the National Security and Defence Council during a tumultuous period marked by Russia’s annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of conflict in the Donbas region.
