COLUMBIA, S.C. — Investigators say that the police chief of a South Carolina town had an “unforeseen medical event” before being involved in a crash earlier in the week in Columbia.
Captain Sonny Collins with the South Carolina Highway Patrol shared on Saturday that the investigation determined that South Congaree Police Chief Steve Jonas experienced a medical event, which caused him to cross the center line and strike another vehicle. Collins said the investigation into the crash has concluded.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol previously reported that the crash occurred on Wednesday at 6:12 p.m. on South Beltline Boulevard. Authorities said Jonas was in a South Congaree police vehicle heading east when he crossed the center line, striking a GMC Terrain that was headed west.
