Famous Actor Graham Greene Dies at 73

Acclaimed actor Graham Greene, best known for his Oscar-nominated performance as Kicking Bird in the 1990 film Dances with Wolves, has passed away at the age of 73.

Greene died on September 1st in a Toronto hospital after a period of illness. His agent, Michael Greene, confirmed the news, remembering him as “a great man of morals, ethics and character who will be eternally missed.”

He added a touching personal note, referencing Greene’s previous agent, Susan Smith, who died in 2013: “You are finally free. Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven.”

A pioneering figure in the industry, Greene was a proud member of the Oneida tribe of the Six Nations Reserve in Ohsweken, Ontario, where he was born on June 22, 1952. Although he didn’t initially envision a career in the arts, Greene was encouraged to pursue acting and began working in professional theater in the 1970s.

His professional career began with a theater workshop in London, England, as he recounted in a 2012 interview. He soon transitioned to film, securing numerous roles throughout the 1980s.

His breakout role came as Kicking Bird in Dances with Wolves, starring alongside Kevin Costner, Mary McDonnell, and Rodney A. Grant. His powerful performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Greene’s career continued to flourish with roles in a range of prominent projects, including The Green Mile, Longmire, Defiance, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and Echo. He remained active in the industry, with several projects released in 2025 and others forthcoming.

Greene is survived by his wife, Hilary Blackmore, whom he married in 1990, and their children.
