SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — While local merchants are counting the proceeds during Labor Day 2025, a local librarian is counting missed meals. Amanda Hayes, assistant library manager at the Suffolk Public Library, said the thought of a child going hungry fuels her mission to give back to the community with ForKids and Suffolk Public Library’s Community Resource Patio.
“Anyone who’s ever raised a child or even known a kid knows how much they eat,” Hayes said. “For a household that’s already struggling to provide one extra meal, one extra sandwich can make or break you.”
